Francis Ford Coppola had an incredible run of films in the 1970s, including The Godfather, its sequel and Apocalypse Now. In 1974 he made a smaller movie called The Conversation which starred Gene Hackman as surveillance expert Harry Caul. Caul is hired to record the conversation of a couple for a mysterious client, and Harry soon begins to worry his recording could get them killed....

Popular creative and custom goods marketplace Etsy is jumping on the augmented reality train and bringing the ability to visualize paintings, photography, and prints in your own space with iPhone or iPad before you make a purchase. Coming several years after many companies like Target, IKEA, and Wayfair added AR to their iOS apps to help customers get a better feel for products in their homes before making a purchase, Etsy has launched its AR feature for iPhone and iPad too (via The Verge)....

Longtime HomeKit accessory maker Eve Systems today announced a handful of updates to its smart home range. The Eve Extend is finally shipping and available to buy, allowing Eve users to connect its Bluetooth accessories to the full range of your home Wi-Fi network. Eve also unveiled Eve Water Guard, a smart water detector coming next year, and enhancements to its Eve Thermo smart radiator valve. The company is also debuting an EU version of its Eve Light Switch, launching in countries beyond the US this October....

Anker’s Eufy brand claims to keep data local, but a security researcher has exposed that the claim is far from true, with footage not only going to the cloud, but remaining visible even after it was supposed to be deleted. Eufy sells several of its security cameras with the promise that video footage and other data are local only, explicitly saying “no one has access to your data but you” on its website....

Move over James Bond, it’s time for Deadpool to try his hand at the spy game, thanks to Secret Agent Deadpool. Marvel Comics and ComiXology announce today the next exclusive release joining the previous ComiXology Originals Digital Series. The first details and artwork for the Secret Agent Deadpool series have arrived ahead of the September launch, giving fans a taste of what’s to come. Facebook was recently caught censoring a link to a TEDx video in a private, Facebook messenger chat. When a Reddit user tried to send a link to Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald’s TEDx talk on improving early child development, Facebook refused to send the message because the action was “deemed abusive” or “was otherwise disallowed” according to a screenshot. Facebook’s moderation tries to keep activity on its site in line with its terms of service....

Starting back with Windows 10 Build 16232, CFA monitors changes that apps try to make to files in protected folders. This feature also lets you manually add additional folders that you want to be protected. It also the apps you want to allow access to certain folders. According to Microsoft exec Dona Sarkar: “Controlled folder access monitors the changes that apps make to files in certain protected folders. If an app attempts to make a change to these files, and the app is blacklisted by the feature, you’ll get a notification about the attempt....

As much as I have been investing in my HomeKit setup over the past few years, HomeKit security cameras are something I hadn’t been able to pull the trigger on. My hesitation is that I didn’t want to be tied to paying monthly fees for each camera, nor did I want a solution that required a cloud service that wasn’t end-to-end encrypted. After eleven years and twenty movies, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally creating their first female-led superhero movie. Not only that, but it is a brand-new superhero for the fans of Marvel movies, rather than a pre-existing character like Black Widow or Scarlet Witch. This character is Captain Marvel and Kevin Feige has said she is the most powerful superhero that movie fans have met to date. With that said, how powerful she is and the extent of her powers in the movie world of Marvel remains to be seen....
