The idea that Superman can’t be everywhere at once, or fight every battle lies at the heart of Superman: Up in The Sky, but the Man of Steel is finally getting the chance to travel back to the battlefields of World War II… to get a lesson in real heroism from one of DC’s greatest war heroes.

It’s a story told as part of Tom King and Andy Kubert’s Superman: Up in The Sky, previously exclusive to Walmart in the form of the DC Superman Giant issues. The larger story takes Clark Kent from modern day Earth across the galaxy, but our exclusive preview of Issue #3 takes a step away from that main story line. Instead, fans get to see what transpires when Superman lands snack in the middle of World War II without his memories–leaving it to the legendary Sgt. Rock and the men of Easy Company to remind him how a hero acts in the face of danger.

The preview isn’t just a trip down memory lane for fans of the Sgt. Rock character, or those who may have wondered how Clark “Kansas” Kent would have handled himself in the trenches of an actual war. It’s also a chance for artist Andy Kubert to contribute an unforgettable chapter to the legacy of Frank Rock, co-created by his father Joe Kubert back in his 1959 Our Army at War #83 debut. Readers won’t need to know the history of Rock or his men to appreciate the full story, showing how Superman does on the frontlines… even when he doesn’t remember what he’s really capable of.

For now, enjoy our exclusive preview of this wartime flashback contained in Superman: Up in The Sky #3 in the pages embedded below:

Those fortunate enough to have caught the Superman: Giant issues know just how powerful this story turns out to be, along with the rest of King, Kubert, Sandra Hope, and Brad Anderson’s work on the series. The actual question of how Superman travels to the war is merely a detail–the point of this story is to remind superhero fans that running into gunfire, carrying friends from danger, and refusing to back down or pass the buck is a whole lot more heroic when you’re not anywhere close to bulletproof. The full issue arrives Wednesday, and interested readers can see the entire solicitation details, credits, and plot synopsis below:
