T2 Trainspotting will reunite the original Trainspotting cast with director Danny Boyle, with the long awaited sequel taking place 20 years after the original. Often, it’s a risk for a sequel to get made so many years later, but T2 could well prove to be the exception to the rule - since Trainspotting still has a hard core fanbase who have ensured the movie is now a cult classic.
In fact, the excitement over this sequel getting made also extends to cast and crew, with everyone happy to reunite again. Ewan McGregor, who reprises his role of heroin addict Mark Renton, has previously spoken of the cast’s fear over returning, and whether any new movie would do the original a disservice - but he also explained how strong the T2 script was, which in turn made everyone happy to return. Indeed, Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh has also offered high praise for the resulting T2, and even called it better than the original Trainspotting.
In an appearance on U.K. daytime show, This Morning, McGregor elaborated a little more on how it felt to return to the world of Trainspotting, and confirmed that all the cast are back (minus Kevin McKidd, whose character, Tommy, died in the first movie) - plus some new additions:
“There were twenty years ago moments every day on set, where you suddenly felt twenty years older, but it was wonderful to be back. I was nervous about it; what if I didn’t feel like Renton any more? My twenty years have been very different to his. But as soon as I got back on set, it was there, and it was so nice to play him again.”
McGregor’s enthusiasm for both his character and the Trainspotting sequel will only serve to build on fans’ excitement. Most have always been hopeful that T2 would turn out well, but it wasn’t until the trailer was released that they started to get the feeling that yes, this movie features all the flawed, deeply troubled characters that they love, coming back for more.
Of course, McGregor wasn’t giving any plot details away, but T2 is thought to be loosely based on “Porno”, Welsh’s Trainspotting sequel novel - which sees Sick Boy trying to make a porno and avoiding Begbie, who has just been released from prison. The trailer hints at there being a possible return to addiction for Renton and Spud, and homage was certainly paid to Trainspotting, with an updated version of Renton’s “Choose Life” monologue playing over the top. However, McGregor stressed that they didn’t try to remake the original:
T2 undoubtedly has a lot to live up to - but with a cast and crew this enthused, and all things pointing toward T2 being a great movie, they might just do it.
“This is different because it’s 20 years on - it’s really different because we didn’t try to remake the film, that would be a bit sad. It’s a new animal but it will be quite special.”
