An epic new painting by artist Scott Campbell includes every character from Avengers: Endgame, even Howard the Duck. The waterbird first appeared in a Guardians of the Galaxy post-credits scene and then cameoed in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 before appearing in Avengers: Endgame. The talking duck can be seen “assembling” with the Avengers against Thanos in that movie’s climactic showdown.
Howard the Duck’s cameo in Avengers: Endgame is just one of the film’s many Easter eggs. The final installment in the Infinity Saga somehow found a way to tie up 21 movies worth of storytelling in a way that felt satisfying; the movie’s cohesive vision rewarded fan anticipation. That said, it comes as no surprise that Avengers: Endgame is one of the highest-grossing films of all-time. The film’s showdown, featuring over 36 characters from various corners of the MCU, will go down in the history books as one of cinema’s most memorable.
Io9 debuted a painting by Los Angeles-based artist Scott Campbell (who goes by Scott C.) depicting the Avengers’ final confrontation with Thanos and his army. Campbell has spent the better portion of the last decade creating watercolor paintings of the greatest showdowns in history, pop culture and otherwise. Appropriately, the artist calls his series “Great Showdowns." His Avengers: Endgame piece is his biggest work to date; the 30x20 inch painting features 100 elements and took 45 hours to complete. Check it out below:
All of Campbell’s watercolor paintings show his characters in high spirits. “I just enjoy the simplicity of the good guys and bad guys standing there looking at each other and smiling,” Campbell told Io9. The childlike nature of his work has arguably never been more appropriate; not only are many Marvel fans children, but a lot of adults have been following these characters for decades. The look on Thanos’ face isn’t necessarily accurate, but the piece’s lightheartedness reflects the feeling most fans got upon hearing “on your left.” In such an overwhelming moment, where virtually every MCU superhero shows up to back Captain America, it can be difficult to spot every iconic character. Fortunately, artists like Campbell are around to pay homage to the most epic superhero event in history.
When it comes to something as beloved as the MCU, there’s no shortage of fan art. Campbell’s diligent painting separates itself from the rest by being a pleasant reminder of Marvel’s ambition and, of course, that Howard the Duck is an Avenger (who can only be seen briefly). The Avengers: Endgame painting, along with 250 other original pieces, will be on display at Campbell’s “Legend of the Great Showdowns" art exhibit which opens March 6 at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles, CA.
